Bio
Jan Kennedy, Associate Professor of Art History, specializes in both European and Asian art. Her research interests include syncretism and artistic intersections of Dutch and Japanese cultures. She teaches a wide range of courses in the areas of 17th-century Netherlandish art, Northern Renaissance art, Chinese and Japanese art, Japanese art of the Edo period, Japanese prints, Asian ceramics, Asian animation, the Art of Zen, and the contemporary art of China and Japan. Additional courses she teaches are those that discuss connections between Eastern and Western art. In 2017, she was honored to receive KCAI’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
She earned a B.A. in English Literature before obtaining M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in art history from the University of Kansas, focusing on 17th-Century Dutch and Flemish art with a minor in Japanese art of the Edo period. She’s a board member of the Society for Friendship with China and a member of the College Art Association, Historians of Netherlandish Art, the Japanese Art History Forum, and the Japanese Art Society of America.
